What's the Best Way to Maintain Leather Boots?
Your Adelante leather boots are the product of expert craftsmanship by skilled cobblers with years of experience. In those years, Adelante artisans have learned a thing or two about keeping shoes in their best shape, so we’re sharing that knowledge with you. It begins with taking good care of our premium leather, chosen for its great looks, durability, and longevity. To keep your boots looking their best, we recommend the following tips:
1. Protect Boots From Rain, Snow, and Dirt
If you like to spend time outside, you’ll want to invest in a leather protectant to repel any unexpected winter weather and spills. Adelante’s all-natural weather protectant works well for leather boots, allowing liquids to sit on top of the leather surface so you can wipe them away before bleeding into the shoe. You should treat your boots about once a week or as needed, applying the protector with a soft cloth and allowing it to dry overnight.
2. Moisturize your Leather
Just like you should moisturize skin, you also need to moisturize leather boots to maintain their texture, prevent cracking, and allow them to last longer. Adelante offers a natural leather conditioner that will moisturize, soften, and strengthen leather boots for long-lasting wear. We recommend conditioning every 6-12 months, allowing the leather to dry out before re-applying. You can also use the conditioner more often if you live in a dry climate or prefer a more polished look.
3. Remove Stains as Soon as Possible
You should try to avoid leather damage from harsh winter weather, if possible. But, if you do find yourself trekking through the snow in your favorite leather boots, it is essential to use a leather cleaner as soon as possible. Adelante’s leather cleaner removes unwanted substances, corrects stains, and keeps your shoes looking as good as new. We recommend applying this cleaner with a soft cloth and allowing your boots to air dry overnight.
4. Use a Damp Cloth to Wipe Down Your Boots
As often as possible, make sure to wipe down leather boots with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt that has accumulated. Since leather is naturally durable, giving your boots a daily wipe down establishes a minimally-sufficient care routine. If you do nothing else, this is the way to go.
5. Store Leather Boots Properly
If your leather boots get soaked with water, it can be tempting to throw them next to a heater or use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process. Don’t! When leather gets wet and is heated up too quickly, it can shrink and crack. Instead, let the leather dry naturally, even if it takes a couple days. It’s also important to keep leather boots out of direct sunlight when storing them. Leather colors will fade naturally over time, but sunlight speeds up that process and can result in cracking. We recommend storing your boots in a dark area with some humidity, and ensuring sufficient airflow to prevent mildew.
Follow these tips, and your boots will age beautifully over time. Looking for more? Visit our blog to learn more about who we are and what we do!
