Breaking in Your New Pair of Leather Boots?
Just like most good things in life, breaking in a new pair of boots takes time. While it may seem like a lengthy process, it’s short compared to the years of comfortable wear you’ll get out of them. Instead of suffering through the process with pain and blisters, you can break in Adelante’s high-quality leather boots easily with a few pointers. Our boots are handcrafted with full-grain leather and come in a variety of widths and sizes, which allows them to effortlessly form to your feet. If you've recently purchased (or if you’re thinking about purchasing) a new pair of boots and are concerned about having to break them in, here are some helpful tips.
Begin With The Right Size
No matter which boots you purchase, it is very difficult to break in pairs that are too big or too small. That’s why Adelante’s leather boots are made-to-order in a range of widths and sizes you won’t find anywhere else. In addition, our tall women’s boots are completely customizable and available in narrow to extra wide calf widths, allowing our customers to find their perfect fit. If you're unsure of your correct shoe size, width, or calf width, schedule a virtual fitting with one of our sizing experts.
Bend at the Crease
When customers receive our high-quality leather boots, they generally have no trouble breaking them in. But don’t take our word for it – here’s what people have to say about the comfort of Adelante boots:
“These immediately felt so soft and never ever gave me blisters or sore feet.” - Mary N.
“Seriously, no break in period! Never got a blister or anything. Super comfortable to wear and walk in.” - Kate B.
“Super cute and comfortable right out of the box! I’ve bought boots from similar brands and the fact that these will require minimal “breaking in” floors me.” - Tara
However, while our boots require minimal to no breaking in, other boots may require some extra time and care. With this in mind, it might be best to limit wearing those boots to 2 to 3 hours per day while keeping a spare pair on hand. You could try this for multiple days in a row, but it would be better to space these days out. This is because your feet require time to adjust to the arch of the boots and rest from it.
Bend at the Crease
Each time you take a step, leather boots typically bend at the ankle and just below the toes, at the ball of the foot. These areas will require some extra attention during the initial break-in. To begin the process, try holding the boots while bending the sole back and forth at the crease, softening the leather fibers around the heel and ankle. While you do this, don’t worry about being too gentle. You are not going to damage your boots; you are simply speeding up the natural process that occurs as you walk around in them over time.
Rock Some Thick Socks
Wearing thicker socks is a great way to protect your feet while steadily stretching the leather on your boots. Additionally, thick socks give your feet extra protection by adding more padding to protect against blisters and hotspots. Wearing thick socks also helps to mold your boots to the shape of your feet. As a result of this gradual pressure, the leather will gently stretch while accelerating the breaking in process. If you want to invest in some thicker socks, we recommend hiking socks with extra heel padding.
